My pizza sandwich, chips and drink. $7.90If you’re ever in dire need of a great sandwich or just want the classic peanut butter and jelly, you should head on over to Potbelly Sandwich Works, located on Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. Open since 1977, Potbelly’s is the perfect place to sit, relax, and enjoy a tasty sub. Not a big sandwich person? Don’t worry they have plenty of options for everyone!
On the outside it looks like the average sandwich shop, but on the inside it is so much more. Potbelly’s has a unique, antique vibe that hits you right when you first walk in. I asked my friend Lexy, who accompanied me on the day I visited the restaurant, what she thought about the décor in general and she said, “[A]s for the décor, I’ve been to a few of them and have seen many different styles of the restaurant but have never gotten bored while visiting because there’s always a lot to look at.” In the restaurant I recently visited located in the DeKalb, Illinois area, there are old fashioned books and signs all over the place. The traditional dim lighting and mood set the atmosphere with a vivid touch of the olden days. Occasionally, if you make it in on a good day there will be a live musician playing in the corner. The great thing about it is that no two look the same. Therefore, every Potbelly Sandwich Works you run into can be a new, pleasure filled experience.
What they’re known for is obviously stated in the title of their store, sandwiches, the original style runs for about $4.40 but if you choose to go with the “bigs” it’s only a dollar more totaling it out to be $5.40 for twice the sandwich. However, they do also have a variety of hand-dipped malts and shakes available upon request. They also offer salads, macaroni or potato salad, a special soup every day, chips, coleslaw, and sweets such as their famous delectable oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Most of the sides run about $1 apiece. All of their sandwiches come on freshly toasted bread to make for the perfect crispy on the outside but yet soft on the inside, sub.
During my visit, I ordered the pizza sandwich. It’s an amazing array of spicy pepperoni, tangy marinara sauce, and it’s smothered in provolone cheese and Italian seasonings. I opted to go with the unhealthy choice of adding the sour cream and onion kettle chips along with a coke, but it was oh so good. Potbelly’s also has an interesting selection when it comes to beverages. There’s the ordinary fountain soda, or a cooler filled with some cans or rare choices of brightly flavored and colored bottled soda that add to the more old fashioned style.
Service on my trip was very friendly and kind. I stepped up to the counter was greeted, and ordered my sandwich. My companion ordered the classic turkey breast and Swiss cheese. According to her, “it has never failed me yet and I just love it so much that I have yet to try anything else.” So with our “never failed us yet sandwiches”, we decided to sit inside at a wooden booth instead of outside. The conversation just flowed in the musty aura of the place. All in all we were very pleased with our visit. I encourage everyone to try it at least once. It’s a very kid and family dining that won’t break the bank.
